Sobre Refugiados

Iba de regreso a mi casa cuando un anuncio en la acera me llamó la atención. Este tiene una foto de Einstein y el siguiente texto: "Einstein era un refugiado". El anuncio es del Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados (ACNUR) en pro de la protección de los derechos de estos.
Cada vez que veo este anuncio me siento chocado por su contenido, particularmente por el mensaje implícito que se desea transmitir con la frase "Einstein era un refugiado".

Leyendo un poco la biografía de este importante personaje, fácilmente se descubre que de hecho efectivamente Einstein migró a Estados Unidos huyendo de Hitler. Esto lo convierte en un refugiado en términos generales según la definición aceptada de la palabra:

A person who "Owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of their nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail him/herself of the protection of that country."

En efecto, Einstein califica como refugiado pero de una manera extraña, pues la razón que lo motiva a salir del país (Hitler - antisemitismo) no es la misma razón que no le permite adherirse a la protección estadounidense ( vinculación con el comunismo - persecución política ).

Ahora bien, volviendo al anuncio, mis 2 posibles interpretaciones del mensaje son las siguientes:

• Todos los refugiados son tan importantes como Einstein


• Existen refugiados tan importantes como Einstein

Debo comentar en primer lugar que ambas interpretaciones del mensaje son igual de "politicamente incorrectas". Con respecto a la primera, se podría tomar como una verdad, pues son tan importantes como Einstein en el sentido que son todos seres humanos, y como tales se debe garantizar sus derechos básicos. Sin embargo, la elección de alguien que revolucionó la física, en terminos de importancia, no es comparable en relevancia con una persona promedio, refugiado o no. En caso de que quisieran hacer énfasis en la idea de "son seres humanos como todos nosotros"(lo cual dudo en sobremanera), considero que Einstein no es la elección adecuada.

Con respecto a la segunda interpretación, esta me parece bastante verídica, sin embargo un tanto controversial. Es claro que han de existir personas refugiadas con el potencial de cambiar el mundo como lo hizo Einstein. El problema aquí es que en este caso, el mensaje sería algo como "ayudemos a TODOS los refugiados, porque existe la probabilidad de que ALGUNO sea realmente importante" lo cual me parece totalmente vulgar y poco correcto, insistiendo en la idea de que el enfoque debe ser que todos somos seres humanos con derechos.

Como crítica final, también me es casi posible asegurar que la condición de 'refugiado' de Einstein era infinitamente privilegiada, a la situación real de un refugiado genérico, lo cual termina de ponerle la cereza al pastel de un anuncio pésimamente hecho.

Al final la idea no es criticar la intención del anuncio,pues si estoy de acuerdo en la misión del ACNUR y la concientización. En lo que si estoy en desacuerdo es en la manera que intentan lograrlo...
